Psalm 16-18

Psalm 16

Preserve me, O El; for in you do I take refuge.

2 O my soul, you have said to Yahweh,

You are my Sovereign: I have no good beyond you.

3 As for the saints that are in the earth,

They are the excellent in whom is all my delight.

4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that give gifts to an idol:

Their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer,

Nor take their names upon my lips.

5 Yahweh is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup:

You maintain my lot.

6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places;

Yes, I have a good heritage.

7 I will bless Yahweh, who has given me counsel;

Yes, my heart instructs me in the night seasons.

8 I have set Yahweh always before me:

Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices:

My flesh also shall dwell in safety.

10 For you will not leave my soul to Sheol;

Neither will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.

11 You will show me the path of life:

In your presence is fulness of joy;

In your right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

A Prayer of David.

Psalm 17

Hear the right, O Yahweh, attend to my cry;

Give ear to my prayer, that goes not out of feigned lips.

2 Let my sentence come forth from your presence;

Let your eyes look upon equity.

3 You have proved my heart; you have visited me in the night;

You have tried me, and find nothing;

I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

4 As for the works of men, by the word of your lips

I have kept myself from the ways of the violent.

5 My steps have held fast to your paths,

My feet have not slipped.

6 I have called upon you, for you will answer me, O El:

Incline your ear to me, and hear my speech.

7 Show your marvelous lovingkindness,

O you who saves by your right hand them that take refuge in you

From those that rise up against them.

8 Keep me as the apple of the eye;

Hide me under the shadow of your wings,

9 From the wicked that oppress me,

My deadly enemies, that compass me about.

10 They are enclosed in their own fat:

With their mouth they speak proudly.

11 They have now compassed us in our steps;

They set their eyes to cast us down to the earth.

12 He is like a lion that is greedy of his prey,

And as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

13 Arise, O Yahweh,

Confront him, cast him down:

Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword;

14 From men by your hand, O Yahweh,

From men of the world, whose portion is in this life,

And whose belly you fill with your treasure:

They are satisfied with children,

And leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

15 As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness;

I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with beholding your form.

For the Chief Musician.

A Psalm of David the servant of Yahweh, who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song in the day that Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: and he said,

Psalm 18

I love you, O Yahweh, my strength.

2 Yahweh is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

My El, my rock, in whom I will take refuge;

My shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

3 I will call upon Yahweh, who is worthy to be praised:

So shall I be saved from my enemies.

4 The cords of death compassed me,

And the floods of unrighteousness made me afraid.

5 The cords of Sheol were all around me;

The snares of death came upon me.

6 In my distress I called upon Yahweh,

And cried to my Elohim:

He heard my voice out of his temple,

And my cry before him came into his ears.

7 Then the earth shook and trembled;

The foundations also of the mountains quaked

And were shaken, because he was angry.

8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils,

And fire out of his mouth devoured:

Coals were kindled by it.

9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down;

And thick darkness was under his feet.

10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly;

Yes, he soared upon the wings of the wind.

11 He made darkness his hiding-place, his pavilion all around him,

Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

12 At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed,

Hailstones and coals of fire.

13 Yahweh also thundered in the heavens,

And the Most High uttered his voice,

Hailstones and coals of fire.

14 And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them;

Yes, lightnings manifold, and discomfited them.

15 Then the channels of waters appeared,

And the foundations of the world were laid bare,

At your rebuke, O Yahweh,

At the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

16 He sent from on high, he took me;

He drew me out of many waters.

17 He delivered me from my strong enemy,

And from them that hated me; for they were too mighty for me.

18 They came upon me in the day of my calamity;

But Yahweh was my stay.

19 He brought me forth also into a large place;

He delivered me, because he delighted in me.

20 Yahweh has rewarded me according to my righteousness;

According to the cleanness of my hands has he recompensed me.

21 For I have kept the ways of Yahweh,

And have not wickedly departed from my Elohim.

22 For all his ordinances were before me.

And I put not away his statutes from me,

23 I was also perfect with him,

And I kept myself from my iniquity.

24 Therefore has Yahweh recompensed me according to my righteousness,

According to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.

25 With the merciful you will show yourself merciful;

With the perfect man you will show yourself perfect.

26 With the pure you will show yourself pure;

and with the perverse you will show yourself froward.

27 For you will save the afflicted people;

But the haughty eyes you will bring down.

28 For you will light my lamp:

Yahweh my Elohim will lighten my darkness.

29 For by you I run upon a troop;

And by my Elohim I leap over a wall.

30 As for El, his way is perfect:

The word of Yahweh is tried;

He is a shield to all them that take refuge in him.

31 For who is Eloah, save Yahweh?

And who is a rock, besides our Elohim,

32 The El that girds me with strength,

And makes my way perfect?

33 He makes my feet like hinds feet:

And sets me upon my high places.

34 He teaches my hands to war;

So that my arms bend a bow of bronze.

35 You have also given me the shield of your salvation;

And your right hand has held me up,

And your gentleness has made me great.

36 You have enlarged my steps under me,

And my feet have not slipped.

37 I will pursue my enemies, and overtake them;

Neither will I turn again till they are consumed.

38 I will strike them through, so that they shall not be able to rise:

They shall fall under my feet.

39 For you have girded me with strength to the battle:

You have subdued under me those that rose up against me.

40 You have also made my enemies turn their backs to me,

That I might cut off them that hate me.

41 They cried, but there was none to save;

Even to Yahweh, but he answered them not.

42 Then I beat them small as the dust before the wind;

I cast them out as the mire of the streets.

43 You have delivered me from the strivings of the people;

You have made me the head of the nations:

A people whom I have not known shall serve me.

44 As soon as they hear of me they shall obey me;

The foreigners shall submit themselves to me.

45 The foreigners shall fade away,

And shall come trembling out of their close places.

46 Yahweh lives; and blessed be my rock;

And exalted be the Elohim of my salvation,

47 Even the El that executes vengeance for me,

And subdues peoples under me.

48 He rescues me from my enemies;

Yes, you lift me up above them that rise up against me;

You deliver me from the violent man.

49 Therefore I will give thanks to you, O Yahweh, among the nations,

And will sing praises to your name.

50 Great deliverance gives he to his king,

And shows lovingkindness to his anointed,

To David and to his seed, for evermore.
