Psalm 139-141

Psalm 139

O Yahweh, you have searched me, and known me.

2 You know my downsitting and my uprising;

You understand my thought afar off.

3 You search out my path and my lying down,

And are acquainted with all my ways.

4 For there is not a word in my tongue,

But, lo, O Yahweh, you know it altogether.

5 You have beset me behind and before,

And laid your hand upon me,

6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

It is high, I cannot attain to it.

7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?

Or where shall I flee from your presence?

8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there:

If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there.

9 If I take the wings of the morning,

And dwell in the farthest parts of the sea;

10 Even there shall your hand lead me,

And your right hand shall hold me.

11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall overwhelm me,

And the light about me shall be night;

12 Even the darkness hides not from you,

But the night shines as the day:

The darkness and the light are both alike to you.

13 For you did form my inward parts:

You did cover me in my mother’s womb.

14 I will give thanks to you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made:

Wonderful are your works;

And that my soul knows right well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you,

When I was made in secret,

And curiously worked in the lowest parts of the earth.

16 Your eyes did see my unformed substance;

And in your book they were all written,

Even the days that were ordained for me,

When as yet there was none of them.

17 How precious also are your thoughts to me, O El!

How great is the sum of them!

18 If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand:

When I awake, I am still with you.

19 Surely you will kill the wicked, O Eloah:

Depart from me therefore, you bloodthirsty men.

20 For they speak against you wickedly,

and your enemies take your name in vain.

21 Do not I hate them, O Yahweh, that hate you?

And am not I grieved with those that rise up against you?

22 I hate them with perfect hatred:

They have become my enemies.

23 Search me, O El, and know my heart:

Try me, and know my thoughts;

24 And see if there is any wicked way in me,

And lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 140

Deliver me, O Yahweh, from the evil man;

Preserve me from the violent man:

2 Who devise mischiefs in their heart;

Continually they gather themselves together for war.

3 They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent;

Adders’ poison is under their lips.

Selah

4 Keep me, O Yahweh, from the hands of the wicked;

Preserve me from the violent man:

Who have purposed to thrust aside my steps.

5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords;

They have spread a net by the wayside;

They have set traps for me.

Selah

6 I said to Yahweh, You are my El:

Give ear to the voice of my supplications, O Yahweh.

7 O Yahweh the Sovereign, the strength of my salvation,

You have covered my head in the day of battle.

8 Grant not, O Yahweh, the desires of the wicked;

Further not his evil device, lest they exalt themselves.

Selah

9 As for the head of those that compass me about,

Let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

10 Let burning coals fall upon them:

Let them be cast into the fire,

Into deep pits, where they shall not rise.

11 An evil speaker shall not be established in the earth:

Evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

12 I know that Yahweh will maintain the cause of the afflicted,

And justice for the needy.

13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks to your name:

The upright shall dwell in your presence.

A Psalm of David.

Psalm 141

Yahweh, I have called upon you; make haste to me:

Give ear to my voice, when I call to you.

2 Let my prayer be set forth as incense before you;

The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

3 Set a watch, O Yahweh, before my mouth;

Keep the door of my lips.

4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing,

To practice deeds of wickedness

With men that work iniquity:

And let me not eat of their dainties.

5 Let the righteous strike me, it shall be a kindness;

And let him reprove me, it shall be as oil upon the head;

Let not my head refuse it:

For even in their wickedness shall my prayer continue.

6 Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock;

And they shall hear my words; for they are sweet.

7 As when one plows and cuts the earth,

Our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol.

8 For my eyes are to you, O Yahweh the Sovereign:

In you do I take refuge; leave not my soul destitute.

9 Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me,

And from the traps of the workers of iniquity.

10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets,

While that I withal escape.
