Deuteronomy 7

When Yahweh your Elohim shall bring you into the land you are entering to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Armorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you; 2 and when Yahweh your Elohim shall deliver them up before you, and you shall defeat them; then you shall utterly destroy them: you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them; 3 neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give to his son, nor his daughter shall you take to your son. 4 For he will turn away your son from following me, that they may serve other elohim: so will the anger of Yahweh be kindled against you, and he will destroy you quickly. 5 But you shall deal with them in this manner: you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their carved images with fire.

6 For you are a holy people to Yahweh your Elohim: Yahweh your Elohim has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all nations that are on the face of the earth. 7 Yahweh did not set his love upon you, or choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples: 8 but because Yahweh loved you, and because he desired to keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, has Yahweh brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 Therefore know that Yahweh your Elohim, he is Elohim, the faithful El, who keeps covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations, 10 and repays them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hates him, he will repay him to his face. 11 You shall therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command you this day, to do them.

12 And it shall come to pass, because you listen to these ordinances, and keep and do them, that Yahweh your Elohim will keep with you the covenant and the mercy which he swore to your fathers: 13 And he will love you, and bless you, and multiply you; he will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your cattle and the young of your flock, in the land which he swore to your fathers to give you. 14 You shall be blessed above all peoples: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle. 15 And Yahweh will take away from you all sickness; and none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you know, will he put upon you, but will lay them on all them that hate you. 16 And you shall consume all the peoples that Yahweh your Elohim shall deliver to you: your eye shall not pity them: neither shall you serve their elohim; for that will be a snare to you.

17 If you shall say in your heart, These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them? 18 You shall not be afraid of them: you shall well remember what Yahweh your Elohim did to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt; 19 the great trials which your eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which Yahweh your Elohim brought you out: so shall Yahweh your Elohim do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20 Moreover Yahweh your Elohim will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and hide themselves, perish from before you. 21 You shall not be terrified of them; for Yahweh your Elohim is among you, an El great and terrible. 22 And Yahweh your Elohim will cast out those nations before you little by little: you may not consume them at once, lest the beasts of the field increase upon you. 23 But Yahweh your Elohim will deliver them before you, and will destroy them with a great destruction, until they are consumed. 24 And he will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name to perish from under heaven: no man shall be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them. 25 The carved images of their elohim you shall burn with fire: you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, or take it to yourself, lest you be snared in it; for it is an abomination to Yahweh your Elohim. 26 And you shall not bring an abomination into your house, and become a cursed thing like it: you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.

Deuteronomy 8

Every commandment which I command you this day shall you observe to do, that you may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember all the way which Yahweh your Elohim had led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, to prove you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not. 3 And he humbled you, and suffered you to hunger, and fed you with manna, which you knew not, neither did your fathers know; that he might make you know that man does not live by bread only, but by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of Yahweh does man live. 4 Your raiment did not wear out on you, neither did your foot swell, these forty years. 5 And you shall consider in your heart, that, as a man corrects his son, so Yahweh your Elohim corrects you. 6 And you shall keep the commandments of Yahweh your Elohim, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. 7 For Yahweh your Elohim is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills; 8 a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey; 9 a land in which you shall eat bread without scarceness, you shall not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills you may dig copper. 10 And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless Yahweh your Elohim for the good land which he has given you.

11 Beware lest you forget Yahweh your Elohim, in not keeping his commandments, and his ordinances, and his statutes, which I command you this day: 12 lest, when you have eaten and are full, and have built good houses, and dwelt in it; 13 and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; 14 then your heart will be lifted up, and you forget Yahweh your Elohim, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; 15 who led you through the great and terrible wilderness, in which were fiery serpents and scorpions, and thirsty ground in which was no water; who brought forth water out of the rock of flint; 16 who fed you in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers did not know that he might humble you, and that he might prove you, to do you good at your latter end: 17 and lest you say in your heart, My power and the might of my hand has acquired this wealth. 18 But you shall remember Yahweh your Elohim, for it is he that gives you power to acquire wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day. 19 And it shall be, if you shall forget Yahweh your Elohim, and walk after other elohim, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish. 20 As the nations that Yahweh makes to perish before you, so shall you perish; because you would not listen to the voice of Yahweh your Elohim.

Deuteronomy 9

Hear, O Israel: you are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard it said, Who can stand before the sons of Anak? 3 Know therefore this day, that Yahweh your Elohim goes over before you as a devouring fire; he will destroy them, and he will bring them down before you; so shall you drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as Yahweh has spoken to you. 4 Speak not you in your heart, after that Yahweh your Elohim has thrust them out from before you, saying, For my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land; whereas for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh drives them out from before you. 5 Not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, did you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your Elohim drives them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

6 Know therefore, that Yahweh your Elohim gives you not this good land to possess it for your righteousness; for you are a stiffnecked people. 7 Remember, forget you not, how you provoked Yahweh your Elohim to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that you went forth out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. 8 Also in Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was angry with you to destroy you. 9 When I had gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which Yahweh made with you, then I remained in the mount forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water. 10 And Yahweh delivered to me the two tables of stone written with the finger of Elohim; and on them was written according to all the words, which Yahweh spoke with you in the mount out of the middle of the fire in the day of the assembly. 11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant. 12 And Yahweh said to me, Arise, go down quickly from here; for your people that you have brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they have quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made for themselves a molten image. 13 Furthermore Yahweh spoke to me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: 14 let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven; and I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they. 15 So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount was burning with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. 16 And I looked, and, behold, you had sinned against Yahweh your Elohim; you had made for yourselves a molten calf: you had turned aside quickly out of the way which Yahweh had commanded you. 17 And I took hold of the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes. 18 And I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I neither ate bread nor drank water; because of all your sin which you sinned, in doing that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger. 19 For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, with which Yahweh was angry against you to destroy you. But Yahweh listened to me that time also. 20 And Yahweh was very angry with Aaron to destroy him: and I prayed for Aaron also at the same time. 21 And I took your sin, the calf which you had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, grinding it very small, until it was as fine as dust: and I cast the dust of it into the brook that descended out of the mount.

22 And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, you provoked Yahweh to wrath. 23 And when Yahweh sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your Elohim, and you believed him not, nor listened to his voice. 24 You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day that I knew you.

25 So I fell down before Yahweh the forty days and forty nights that I fell down, because Yahweh had said he would destroy you. 26 And I prayed to Yahweh, and said, O sovereign Yahweh, destroy not your people and your inheritance, that you have redeemed through your greatness, that you have brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; Do not look on the stubbornness of this people, to their wickedness, or to their sin, 28 lest the land from where you brought us out say, Because Yahweh was not able to bring them into the land which he promised to them, and because he hated them, he has brought them out to kill them in the wilderness. 29 Yet they are your people and your inheritance, which you brought out by your great power and by your outstretched arm.
